HAWERA BAND.
(To the Editor.) Sir, —Can you inform your numerous readers if it is true that the Hawera Borough Council expressed their willness to nay up to £2OO per annum to assist in payment of a band conductor ; in fact, some say it was placed on the estimates. If this is correct, how long are the committee responsible for the band going to. sleep? To-day one of our old veterans was buried with military honours; the absence of the band was very noticeable. I would suggest that the Mayor call a public meeting of citizens, and possibly with, new blood to manage the band there' will be more harmony in the future. Thanking you, Mr Editor, for what you have written in the past on this question.—l am, etc., ; PROGRESS. July 18, 1924. [We understand that the Borough Council placed a certain sum. on the estimates-to be spent on the band l , but nothing , further has been done. The Borough Council meets on Monday, and may feel inclined to make public the information which the correspondent seeks. It might he added that Mr 01lerenshaw did all he could to get a hand together for the veteran’s funeral, but was unsuccessful. —Ed.}
