The death of Mr S. Russell Wells, Conservative M.P. for Bedford in the British House of Commons, is announced in a London cable. The Rev. Horace Lindsav, M.A., was last night inducted as vicar of Inglewood bv Archdeacon F. G. Evans as-s-isted by the Revs. F. G. Harvie’and E. H. Strong. Subsequently Mr Lindsay was welcomed by the parishioners at a largely attended social in the Parish Hall.

Mr Clarence Clarke, C.E., of Auckland, was yestredav appointed to the position of engineer to the Inglewood County. There were twenty-three applicants for the position. The death of Mrs Henrietta Ward the painter, is reported in a London cablegram. Bhe worked for Queen Victoria 'from time to time, and in 191 S published her reminiscences.

A familiar figure of old Palmerston North, in the person of Mr James L. White, passed away at the Palmerston North Hospital on Sunday at the a»e of 59 years. The late Mr White was well Jcno-wn in Palmerston North 40 years ago, where he was in the employ ol Mr L. G. West, and later entered business there as an architect. A native of West Maitland, New South Wales, the deceased spent most of his time in the Dominion, returning to Palmerston North only three weeks ago from extensive travels in various parts of New Zealand.

Mr. Christopher Smith, formerly conductor of the famous Besses of the Barn Band, and more recently conductor ol the Adelaide Tramway Band has been appointed by the Auckland ’City Council as bandmaster of the- proposed municipal band. There were 28 applicants from England, Australia and all parts of New Zealand. It is intended to organise a first class military band of forty instruments, to be in operation before the end of the present year —Press Assn.
