KAPONGA.

QUEEN CARNIVAL. The positions of the candidates in the Queen Carnival in progress at Kaponga are as follow: Sports candidate, Miss M. Crowlev, 2656, first. City candidate, Miss N. Bolger, 1856, second. Farmers’ candidate, Miss E. Schicker, 1600. third. The announcement, the first which has been made since the inauguration of the carnival, was made on Friday evening at the function held in the Convent schoolroom in aid of the City Queen candidate. The declaration was naturally awaited with considerable interest, as, though it is bv no means final, it gives the results of the efforts organised on behalf of their respective candidates by the three committees since the opening function at Mr D. Malone's residence on May 19. It is interesting to note that the snorts candidate, who appeared first in*the field, now occupies pride of place. The closing date of the carnival has not yet been decided upon, but as it is expected •to continue for some six weeks or two months, any of the three candidates may be expected to head the poll when the final count i& taken. Arrangements are being made to have the colours of the candidates, indicating their respective position, flown from a flagstaff at some conspicuous point in the town in order that those' interested mav be kept informed of the state of the poll. The city committee announces a euchre party and dance to be held this evening in the Kapuni Hall, and on riday will conduct a sale of goods from a stall to be located in the town.
