(by telegraph—press association.', a , , July 13. me Auckland soccer representatives successfully defended the'Brown Shield, against the challenge of South Auckland at- the Domain on Saturday before a crewd estimated at 4000.' The visitors played surprisingly well, and fought a splendid uphill battle against their more experienced and better trained opponents. Auckland won bv three goals to nil. HAWERA (3) v. KAPONGA (2). Kaponga lowered their colours to Hawera on Saturday, when thev were defeated by the odd goal in five after a fast game. This is Kaponga’s first defeat this season, and they worked hard to save one point, but the Hawera defence proved too good. This game should have been played at Kaponga, but as their ground was not-available, the Kaponga players sportingly offered to play at Hawera. Hawera took the field for the first time this season with all players as published; Kaponga also was at full strength. Pooch won the toss, and decided to P* a Y with the wind behind him. 1 reakley set the ball going, and immediately Kaponga went through and forced a corner. The ball hovered around Hawera’s goal until Beare relieved with a long kick. Then Hawera took a turn at attacking. A long shot from Pooch went just wide of the post. Galloway worked through the Kaponga defence, and was neatly beaten bv Nicholls in front of th© goal. Kaponga were sent back again. Pooch, Barker, and Dalgleish played, well in the halfback line. A free kick against Hawera looked dangerous. Renwick saved a beauty from Freakley and again from S. Pollard. J. Campbell, of Hawera, put in a good run, and sent to Haistead, whose shot went over the top From the free kick Hislop took the ball well down, but his centre was headed out by Pullen. Stewart tried a long one, which Renwick saved. Hawera forwards went down in line, and combined work gave Haistead a chance, and he put a first timer into the net. Des Forges could not get to it in time. Hawera I—o.1 —0. Kaponga put some “ginger” into it after this reverse, and Hawera had a spell at defending. Geo; Brown charged down a beauty from Campbell (Kaponga). Hawera’started a good movement that Mathews broke und sent to S. Pollard. That player took well down and transferred .to Freakley, who drew the defence and slipped the ball to B. Pollard, who scored with a shot that gave Renwick no chance—a pretty piece of work. From the kick-off Hawera, attacked, and H. Pollard cleared from Brown and Galloway. Freakley tried to get through, but was pulled* up bv Pooch, who sent to Soundv. The latter dropped a centre in front of Kaponga’s goal, and some good passing from Hawera’s inside forwards enabled Campbell to score Hawera’s second goal. 2 1- Half-time came soon after with the game in midfield. On resuming Kaponga pressed and forced several corners in succession, but they were fruitless. Kaponga were swinging the ball about, hut Pooch was in ms glory. He was mainly responsible for spoiling Kaponga’s work, and his passes to his forwards were a treat to watch. S. Pollard tried a solo, but was stopped by Pullen. J. Campbell showed some good footwork, and a shot from Dalgleish was turned by Des Forges for a corner, which was fruitless. At the other end Campbell and Freakley got very close. Freakley’s shot went over. After some midfield play Campbell secured, and, 4 beating all opposition, went through on his own and scored Hawera’s third goal. 3—l. Kaponga -worked hard to reduce the lead, and a shot from Stewart hit the upright and went into play again, Hislop forcing a corner. With 10 minutes to go Hawera looked dangerous, Soundy’s shot going iust wide. From a , free kick S. Pollard secured and took the ball into Hawera’s penalty area, where he was fouled hv a defender. Freakley took the penalty kick, and gave Renwick no chance to save. 3-—2. This proved to be the final score, as the game ended soon after, leaving Hawera winners of the hardest game this season. Mr' Geo. Reading was the referee-.
