WEST COAST LEASES. PAYMENT OF MONEYS DUE. (By Telegraph.—Special to Star.) WELLINGTON, July 11. Mr. Hawken has asked the Minister for Native Affairs when it is intended to pay out moneys due to lessees for their improvements under the West Coast Settlement Act, as these leases have now terminated and lessees are waiting for their money. SOLDIER SETTLERS (BY TELEGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION.) WELLINGTON, July 11. In the House to-day -Mr. J. Horn (Wakatipu) urged that soldier settlers in the backblocks should have every consideration-in the matter of financial assistance to build houses. The Prime Minister interjected that in the past eight months the Government had given such assistance to the extent of £600,000. Mr. Horn rejoined that some of the men he referred to were too diffident or too independent, and would rather live with their families in huts than ask for that to which they were entitled.
