CANCER

CLAIM BY DR., GLOVER. THE GERM THEORY. BY CABLE—PRESS ASSOCIATION—COPYRIGHT, NEW YORK, July 9. At Philadelphia, Dr. T. j. Glover, a native of Toronto, appearing before a group of eminent _ physicians, defended his ciaim of the discovery and isolation of the germ of cancer. He showed lantern slides and adduced biological and morphological data forming the basis of immunity. Supporting Dr. Glover’s theory were Dr. .Julian Louden, chief physician of St. Michael’s Hospital, Toronto, i)r. James McCormick, staff physician, and Dr. Edmund Aing, ex-president oi the council of the Toronto Academy of Medicine.

Dr. Glover gave a scientific exposition of his treatment, saying: “In our work for immunity we inoculated a number of guinea pigs of eciual weight and monkeys of the same size witii the old standard toxin, partially neutralised bv the addition of anti-toxin. These inoculations were made, once weekly during three weeks. Then, after watching the animals for three months, wo inoculated them, along with an equal number of healthy control animals, using a pre-determined lethal nose ot fresh toxin. The control animals all died within three davs, but the immunized animals survived the doses, whose virulence was 50 per. cent, greater. This, I believe, is applicable to the production of immunity in human beings.’’ Dr. Glover added: “We used healthy horses, giving a negative glanders test, injecting them initially with anti-toxin, and thereafter periodically injecting toxin in increasing amounts. The horses, within three months, develop anti-toxin of the desired potency, which is then extracted by a sterile process for the use of the clOyc.”

A cable from New York early last month stated : According to a telegram from Philadelphia, the North American, in an article withheld from publication for fifteen months, “in the interest of science,” says the cause of cancer has been discovered, also the treatment, which, though still in the experimental stage, is producing remarkable results. The discoverer is Dr. T. J. Glover, who, in an article, says he has established scientifically that the disease is due to a micro organism and has isolated the germ and proved by conclusive laboratory test, known as the Koch cycle, its part as the causative factor. Dr. Glover conducted research work in New York for four years. Dr. Glover is now making significant progress in perfecting his method of determining the presence of the micro-organism in the blood, in order to csetect the disease in the incipient stage, and thus affording a greater possibility of cure. During the discussion various physicians, expressing , scepticism, asked Dr. Glover to give them his . formula, to enable them to certify his result. This Dr. Glover declined, alleging he was not ready. This caused a distinctly unfavourable impression, and the meeting adjourned with various specialists casting doubts on his data.
