PERSONAL ITEMS.
Mr. Petty, of Matapu, who was injured by a piece of stone hurled through the air during blasting operations, and who was removed to the Hawera hospital, was reported this morning to be doing very well. The term of office of Sir James Allen as High Commissioner ha s been further extended for a term of two years. It is the intention of the Government to develop the policy of staffing the High Commissioner’s office with New Zealanders and already there are seventeen New Zealanders stationed there. In his annual report to the New Zealand Racing Conference in Wellington this morning, the president (Sir George Clifford) said: ‘‘You will grieve with me at the absence to-day of Sir Robert Nolan, for so many years one of our wisest and most valued counsellors. His ripe judgment and kindly mind commanded cur confidence, and most truly may it be said that he laid down his life in his country’s service in a most noble work. Mr B. L. Lane and Dr. A. K. Newman were also with us on several occasions and have passed away, to our sorrow, during the year.” Frederick Martin, of Nolantown, another of the early pioneers and father of Mr. H. G. Tonks, passed away this morning at the ripe age of 88 years. He had resided in New Zealand for 65 years. Most of this time had been spent at Norm an by, Hawera and Manaia. For a few years he resided in Wanganui and Palmerston. The funeral will take place, at 2 o’clock on Friday afternoon. Sympathy will be felt for the relatives, who, with deceased, are well-known and much esteemed. The new manager of the Kakaramea factory, Mr Meharry, has taken up his residence. He is a noted athlete,. Antes a _ correspondent, having several outstanding performances to his credit. Kakaramea under Mr Crosbie’s management has the honour of being second on the grading list for New Zealand for the past season, with 92.88 ‘points. In addition to this Mr Crosbie won several valuable cups. To him we extend the congratulations of the residents of the district. The Church of England Synod of the Wellington Diocese passed the following resolution at the conclusion of its proceedings: ‘ ‘That as the term of their departure from the shores of New Zealand is drawing near, the Right Reverend the President of the Synod be requested to convey to His Excellency the Governor-General, Lady Jellicoe, and their family , the sincere good wishes of this Synod, and to express a hope that wherever they go happiness may attend them.” Dr. T. Haigh (| who is visiting New Zealand this year as examiner for the Associated Board of the Royal Academy and Royal College of "Music, is a passenger by the Maunganui for Sydney. He will return to New Zealand in August. Dr. Haigh visited New Zealand as examiner in 1921. and has also carried out the same work in England, Canada, and Australia. He "is one of the finest recital organists in England, and it is hoped that he may be able to * give recitals where there are suitable organs during his tour of New Zealand. Our Kakaramea correspondent ■writes as follows: One of the oldest identities of Kakaramea. passed away at the Patea Hospital on Saturday morning in the person of Mrs A. A. Caves. The deceased lady took seriously ill on the 20th June, and was removed at once to the hospital. She lingered painlessly there until Saturday, when she passed quietly away. Mrs Caves was 61 years of age, and although born in England had lived most of her life in New Zealand. She resided for upwards of 20 years in Kakaramea. Her genial and great hearted personality will be greatly missed in Kakaramea, as she was renowned for her constant willingness assist those in sickness and in trouble. She is survived by her husband, Mr J. Caves, and! a grown-up family of three daughters and two sons, namely, Messrs William and Archibald Caves (Kakaramea), Mrs P. W. Tong and Mrs W. Large (Kakaramea), and Mrs H. L. Chadwick (Hawera).
