HOURS FOR RAILWAYMEN. (BX TELEGRAPH—PRESS ASSOCIATION.) ' WELLINGTON, July 8. In the House’ to-day the Minister for Railways (the Hon. j. G. Coates) said that until the court of enquiry had concluded its investigations it was impossible to say what hours would he fixed r "railway workers, and in the meantime the men were working 40 hours. If those conditions were finally established there would he a surplus of labour of about 1200 men, but it was not proposed to dispense with these men, as with the ordinary variation of labour in connection with, the railways it was expected these men would be absorbed within 12 months.
