OLYMPIC GAMES.

SENSATION OF THE DAY. BY CABLE—PRESS ASSOCIATION—COPYRIGHT. m ' PARIS, July 7. The final of the 100 metres resulted: Abrahams 1, Scholz 2, Porritt 3. Time, 10 3-ssecs. The 100 metres provided the sensation of the day. Abrahams’ victory was the first success Englishmen have ever gained in that sprint -at the Olympics. Abrahams equalled the world’s record three times over the course. He was slightly behind Porritt and Scholz in the first half of the final, but a super flash sprint enabled him to overhaul the leaders and come aw.ay about 80 metres from home to win by four feet. An immense demonstration of all nations, in which the Americans were conspicuous, lasted, ten minutes. When the Union Jack was hoisted the National Anthem was sung, the whole assemblage standing. Bowman was fourth, Paddock fifth and Murchison sixth in the final.

Porritt (.New Zealand) made a perfect start, but was badly placed in 60 metres, where, dashing up even with the field and never letting down, he' made a beautiful finish, inches behind Scholz. Interviewed, -Porritt said: “I never felt better. Sunday’s racing sharpened me up.” The general opinion is that Carr (Australia) did excellently, but was not quite in the class of the finalists. The games were long drawn out, not being finished until long after 8 o’clock. Athletes complain that they are compelled. to remain in the field too long awaiting events.
