DEMONSTRATION AREAS DISCUSSION AT HAWERA. Replying to Mr Johnson at the A. and P. Conference yesterday, Mr Grant (New Plymouth) said he thought that there was every likelihood of an application for a grant for a, demonstration iarm for Hawera, similiar to those at Manaia and Stratford, being A meeting, he said, should be called at Hawera' and a committee appointed to invite offers of suitable areas. Having selected a place, an application could then be made to the Government for a_ subsidy. He expressed the opinion that the Government did not give half enough assistance in such cases. This brought Mr E. Washer to his feet, who .said that the old pioneers did not go to the Government for help and it would he better to-day if they all put- their backs to the wall and helped themselves. Mr Grant: That is all very well, hut the Government reaps the' advantage m increased production. Air Peterson- said that in all such matters private gain was sought. Mr Ford said if there was any suitable reserve near Hawera they might ask the Government for its use. ° Mr Washer said that what he was protesting against was the tendency to run to the Government at all times when the people might heln themselves. Mr Gillanders j pointed out that there were organisations like the Boys’ and Girls’ Clubs which were being run by the farmers, bub in experimental work where they might have to'wait vears for results it was only right that the Government should assist. It was stated in the course of the discussion that Moumahaki is now heing surveyed prior to leasing, and that the inn Ver ey farmers were requesting that 100 acres be reserved as a demonstration area.
