university Colleges. /■ PROPOSED SEPARATION. (BY TELEGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION.) AUCKLAND, July 7. The important question of granting autonomy to the four university colleges of New Zealand was discussed by the Council of the'Auckland University College to-day. The acting-president (ProfessoY Thomas) said the Profeshorial Board liad carried the following resolution: “That this board is .of opinion that, on account of the continually increasdifficulty of carrying on university work under the federated system, the time has arrived when the question of creating individual.- universities in Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch and Dunedin should be seriously considered.” The board also proposed that a commission be appointed for considering whether separate universities should be created, and, in tlie event of any steps being taken, to make' recommendations as to the constitution and powers and distribution of . the funds now- administered by the University of New Zealand. The council resolved that the colleges should receive autonomous. powers in the matter of studies and the granting of degrees, .requesting the Government to appoint- a commission. The council suggested that a prominent educationalist from outside New 7 . Zealand be invited to act as chairman of the commission.
