FORGERY CHARGE

At the Police Court to-day a young man, Eric John Mercer, pleaded not guilty to a charge of forgery and uttering and w-as committed for trial It was alleged that the accused ar™’Ked .to purchase a motor-car for £520, giving a cheque for that amount and signing his uncle’s name. The manager of the motor-car company said it was understood the accused w-as not to have the car until witness found whether the cheque would be met. In a statement to a detective Mercer admitted that he took four cheque forms from hi s uncle’s house at Raglan, and, coming to Auckland, he wrote a cheque for £520. knowing it would not he cashed. He said he wanted to- make his friend believe lie was a man of means. On a charge of forgery and uttering a cheque for £4 at Te.Awamutu, Mercer was remanded to appear there on July 15.
