AUSTRALIAN PROPOSALS. THE BUILDING OF CRUISERS. BY CABLE—PRESS ASSOCIATION-COPYRIGHT SYDNEY, July 7. Mr Bowden (Minister for Defence) conferred with the director of , shipbuilding and the chairman of the Commonwealth Shipping Board in regard to the construction of one of two new cruisers at Cockatoo Island. The conference was held in camera in Melbourne. , As an alternative to the building of one cruiser at Cockatoo Island, the Government is considering a proposal to build both the cruisers in England and. with the money saved, to proceed with the construction of a great naval floating dock at Cockatoo Island, making Australia the potential base for capital ships of the British Navy in war time. It was considered likely that New Zealand would co-operate in the obstruction of the dock and also contribute a share of the cost.
