The area of occupied farms is 140,887,893 acres, or less than one-tenth of Canada, and nearly onehalt' of this is described as unimproved. In 190.1 the occupied farms were only 63,422,338 acres, and in 1.911 they were j.08,968, t 10 acres. Of the present acreage 49,680,666 are in field crops. In 1901 the urban population. instead of being nearly one-half of the whole, was a little more than 2,000,000 out of 5,323,967. The home market afforded by the urban centres has grown much faster than the farm population.
