Recently the butchers at the Kaiapoi freezing works came upon a curious thing. In the jaw-bone of an old cow wa s found an axe-head. This was hardly complete, as one side of„ the hole where the handle goes had been broken off before the cow picked up the implement (savs the Kaiapoi Record). The jawbone had grown partly around the axe-head, but it was .protruding, and one can imagine the pain the animal must have endured until it got used to carrying the lump of metal around in its mouth. The axe-head measured oj Ivy 3 inches, and the action of eating had worn the blade of the axe quite sharp. Possibly the axe had been nicked up in mistake for a bone. The butchers reckon the cow had carried it for two years.
