USE OF MOTOR.
REPLACES LOCOMOTIVE. SHUNTING ON WHARF. (Bv Telegraph.—Special to Star.) WELLINGTON, July 4. Great interest was shown at the King’s Wharf, Wellington, in the nse of a motor tractor for shunting purposes. The tractor was fitted with the usual flanged railway wheels, each of the two pairs being connected by a flat rod. It did the work expected from a locomotive, but required only one man. the driver. Its cost is under £250. The tractor hauled with ease loads of from 126 to 136 tons of coal-filled trucks. The test was conducted by the engineer of the Railway Department, and if they are successful from a practical and economic point of view the motor tractor is likely to usurp the place of the locomotive as a hauler of railway trucks or wagons between the railway yards and the ship’s side; also for shunting purposes in the yards.
