PREFERENCE
MR BRUCE REBUKED. BY CABLE-PRESS ASSOCIATION—COPYRIGHT Received July 5, 9.55 a.m. LONDON, July 4. Commenting on Mr. Bruce’s recent statement that the Imperial Parliament’s unsatisfactory reception of the preference resolutions was not much encouragement to deal with the recommenations of the Economic Conference, the Meekly Nation says it wished Mr Bruce would rid himseif of the habit of attempting to put indirect pressure on Britain in regard to the Singapore base and preference. Australia has. every light to refuse the ratification of any proposal of which she disapproves on its merits, but veiled threats to turn down one recommendation merely bv way of retaliation for the rejection of another does not conduce to the relations ! we desire to see within the Empire, nor will it promote the. acceptance of Mr. Bruce’s-view. It is fear of this sort of thing becoming common that forms one of the main objections to Imperial preference itself.” —Reuter.
