HOTELKEEPER FINED. CBY TELEGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION.) AUCKLAND, July 4. At the Police Court to-day an Opotiki hotelkeeper, David Charles Hawkins, was fined £5 on each of two charges of failing to furnish income returns for the years 1922 and 1923. Mr. Hubble, for the. department, said the defendant had been shown everv consideration. As far back as 1900 he had made returns, but in 1917 and 1918 he did not file any return, and was assessed in default, Hawkins being afterwards given a clean start. In 1920 and 1921 he filed returns, but since 1922 no payment had been made. The arrears were now £BB6 18s 3d. The returns received since the summons was served showed that in 1922 he made a profit of £9OO, hut in 1923 hi s return showed a loss. Defendant’s counsel pleaded ill-health since 1920 and said the accountant on whom the defendant relied failed to furnish the returns.

Jt is stated that last vear 12,500 default assessments had to he made, throwing an enormous amount of work on to the Department and leausiryfg great expense. Penalties ranging from I‘2 to £8 were inflicted on seven persons and one of these, it was alleged, would not, have had to pay tax had he scut in a return, hut he was fined . il the same, as a lesson.
