INDUSTRIES AND COMMERCE.
EXHIBITS AT SHOW. The Winter Show authorities of Hawera are to he heartily congratulated upon the very comprehensive exhibition. that is now being conducted in the centre of South Taranaki district. Industrial and commercial interests in all parts of the Dominion are realising what an. excellent opportunity has been made available through the Hawera, winter exhibition for the display of their goods with a view to increased business, and the result is a great credit to the authorities responsible. The Government of. New Zealand has shown its practical sympathy with and approval of the work and enthusiasm of the show authorities by making special exhibits, with a view to encouraging the growth of commerce and industry in this district and in the Dominion generally, and for the first time in the history of New Zealand the Department of Industries and Commerce has taken the opportunitys afforded to come away from the four main centres and make an excellent exhibit at a winter show in an outside district. This is a compliment to the citizens, not only of Hawera, but also to the residents of the whole district of Taranaki. The department functions for a very great many purposes, but one of its chief duties is to engender a national spirit that will enable New Zealanders to realise that their own products are the best, aiid that they should by every means possible encourage the growth of New Zealand’s industries, both primary and secondary. The former are undoubtedly will develop, and the time has now arrived when the secondary or manufacturing industries of the Dominion require all the practical help that can be given them. Unfortunately very few of our people realise what is actually being made in the Dominion, and with a view* to fostering enthusiasm and patriotism for “made in New Zealand” goods, the Industries Department has collected and has now on exhibition at the Winter Show an excellent range of “odds and ends” made in this country. \ isitors to the show have invariably expressed their surprise at the very wide range and excellent quality of the locally manufactured articles shown. The samples on view are but few in comparison with the full range of New Zealand manufactures. For those interested a directory of New Zealand manufacturers is available ; this publicatioTi having been compiled recently by the Department of Industries is Very oompYehensive. By means of graphs the public are made acquainted with the gradual process of expansion of the secondary industries, and also with the wonderful position that New Zealand holds as a food producer for the United Kingdom.' Some of the products of New Zealand’s mandated territory Samoa—-are also shown in the External Affairs Department section. The manufacturers of the Dominion should be extremely well satisfied and pleased with the excellent work the Industries and Commerce Department is doing on their behalf The officers of the department generally are to be congratulated upon the very fine exhibit depicting the industries and commerce, of the Dominion It is understood that during the remainiiig days of the show special lecturettes will be given by Mr. L. J Schmitt, advisory accountant*of the department, to the senior pupils of the local schools on the subject of the nature of New Zealand’s secondary i„! diistries and the .necessity, for their de velopment. * All visitors to the show will be well advised not to miss the industries and commerce exhibit.
