Five men are missing and eight seriously injured as the result of an explosion of naphtha on board the British freighter Egremont Castle at the dock. The vessel’s cargo consisted of 100,000 gallons of highest quality airplane gasoline, 100,000 gallons of naphtha, and a large quantity of motor oil. The flames spread rapidly, and the hatches were battened dow r n, the vessel towed in the river and sunk.
LIQUOR ON SHIPS. NEW YORK, June 25. The Federal Court refused an order sought directing the District Attorney to seize liquors aboard the Rerengaria. ATTENDANCE AT WEMBLEY. LONDON, June 27. Yesterday’s attendance at Wembley brought the total to. over 5,000,000 since opening.—Reuter. WIRELESS LICENSES. LONDON. June 27. Presiding at the annual meeting of the Eastern Extension Telegraph Company, Sir John Pender said the company had applied for a wireless license, but had to wait till Britain declared her policy before anything could be done. They had received the terms for a license affecting India, but it was absolutely impossible for the company to carry these out, and prolonged negotiations as regards China- had proved abortive. BRITISH LEGITIMACY BILL. LONDON, June 27. ihe House of. Commons by 117 votes to 13 carried the third reading of the Legitimacy Bill. Three women Commoners, Mrs Atholl, Lady Astor, and Mrs Philipson, wanted to exclude children whose parents or one of them was married to someone else at the times of birth, but Mrs Susan Lawrence opposed, and the restriction was rejected by 136 votes to 65.—Ans.-N.Z.
