An examination of the seismograph Records confirms that the centre of the earthquake was a little south of Macquarrie Islands. It- is stated that the motion recorded was considerably greatei than in the case of the Japanese ’quake.

A telegram from Townsville states that the Singapore radio station is broadcasting a message that the steamer Tbrjilla reported having observed thick muddy water, probably the ie<ault of a volcanic eruption in the Assn C}llna Sea.—Aus.-N.Z. Cable
