EARTHQUAKE

LONG DURATION. VIOLENT DISTURBANCE. JY CABLB— PaiSß ASSOCIATION—COPYRIGHT LONDON, June 26. Most violent earthquake shocks are reported in several world centres. At Faenzas, in Italy, the record at the Bendandio Observatory shows that the shocks began at 3 a.m. and lasted for four hours. It appeared that the shocks occurred seven thousand miles away. The quivering of the apparatus carried off the quills of the instrument. Capetown reports that a shock was registered at the Royal Observatory. It lasted two and a half hours, beginning at 3.50 a.m. It was apparentlv 5000 miles off. NEW YORK, June 26. A telegram from San Jose, California, says that an earthquake, approximately of the same violence as the recent Japanese one, centred, probably in Central America, and continuing "for over an hour and a half, has been registered at Santa Clara University. It started at 6 p.m.

SYDNEY, June 27. The Riverview Observatory explains that a mistake was made in centring yesterday’s earthquake at Port Moresby through the hasty reading of the machine. The real position was south of McQuarrie Island, 1740 miles from Sydney. The disturbance was very violent, and continued for over half an hour, one instrument vibrating so much that it kept hitting against the stops. —Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn.
