CHAMBER OF COMMERCE.
MONTHLY MEETING. The monthly meeting of the Hawera •Miamoer or commerce was Held m tiie ceoietary s oixice last mgnt, wnen there wtie present: Messrs Jt. C. Eletener (cliau;, it. n. riarrop, F. Gnlanaers, it. Dougms, i>. -H. Sellar, and P. Bond. The Stratford Chamber wrote stating that tire matter •or tile prospective amendment of tlie Mortgages Extension Act had been considered at their meeting this month, wnen it was resolved: “Ihat- tins chamber, understanding that- an amendment to the Mortgages Extension Act will be introduced this session, urge, that copies of the proposed Bill ne circulated amongst chambers of commerce and ether organised commercial bodies so as to affoid time for perusal and criticism before the amendment is nassed.” The Stratford Chamber consequently asked the Hawera Chamber's co-operation in the matter. It was decided to support the resolution, and to also write to the. member tor the district asking him to forward a draft copy of the bill as soon as he was able to do so. The General Manager of Railways, Air R. \Y. AlcYilley, wrote in repiy to representations from the Chamber, stating that the condition of the access to the Hawera goodshed and the traffic delays occasioned at the Tawhiti crossing had 'received his careful attention. He found that the access to the goodsshed was slightly broken in,places, due to the bad weather experienced, and the heavy traffic, and instructions had been given to have the matter attended to. He had been unable to ascertain that any vehicle had been stuck in the mud in the yard proper, although he understood that a motor lorry had got into difficulties loading ashes in the yard near the locomotive sheds. This, however, was due to the fact that after being loaded, the wheels of the lorry were in a hole where the ashes had been taken from, and thei lorry was unable to get out-.
As regards the level crossing at Tawhiti Road, he must point out that shunting over this crossing was unavoidable under the present arrangement of the Hawera- station yard. The shunting staff had instructions to see that every possible consideration was given to road traffic at this crossing to prevent, as far as possible, any delays to passing traffic, and his inquiries showed that the.se instructions were being strictly observed, and the only delays occasioned were those inseparable from the present yard arrangements. The disability in connection with this road crossing would be obviated by the rearrangement of the station and yard now in hand.
The letter was held over until the next meeting.
