STRIKE POLICY
RAILWAY INSTITUTE. STAND FOR, CONSTITUTIONAL METHODS. (BY TELEGRAPH press ASSOCIATION.) WELLINGTON, June 25. At- the conference of the Railway Offic -ers’ Institute, during a discussion regarding the institute’s strike policy, a proposal was made that questions should be drafted and a plebiscite of the whole of the members taken, the majority to decide the strike policy to he followed in future. The proposal was negatived. The following motion was carried: “That- the conference resolves that our definite policy is to stand for constitutional action, we being opposed to direct action -, that as officers of the department and part of the. management ol the sendee we refuse to be involved in any trouble caused by other societies ; and further that, in the event oi any such trouble arising, members should carry out their duties as directed.”
the following amendment was lost: “That in the event of industrial trouble between the Railway Department- and any socuety °f the service, the policy u Unihvay Officers’ 'lnstitute- is that its members should perform whatever duties the department instructs them to undertake.”
A further amendment, which was also lost read.- ‘‘That the polic-v of the institute in reference to strikes be neutial as in the past., and that the Minister tor Railways be asked to give deft mte approval to this traditional policy of the institute.”
During the afternoon the delegates were received by the Minister for Railways (the Hon. J. G. Coates), when matters of major importance, includimr salary increases, were discussed with W. 11 Mc-Viliyf general managei ‘ (Mr. R.
