THE RUHR
POLICY OF M. HERRIOT. UNEASY FEELING IN FRANCE. WARNING TO GERMANY. (BY TELEGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION.) LONDON, June 24. A Paris correspondent says that, although French public opinion welcomes with sincere satisfaction the prospect of closer co-operation with .Britain, there undoubtedly exists real uneasiness concerning the change in French policy to which the Premier (M. Herriot) has committed himself. It has been so long drummed in the ears of the French people that only the occupation of the Ruhr will compel Germany to pay, and France will only evacuate the Ruhr in proportion as Germany effects payments, that any suggestion of the abandonment of the military occupation of the Ruhr fills them with something akin to dismay. They are yet to be persuaded that this tangible pledge can be replaced by guarantees of an equivalent value BRUSSELS. June 24.
M. Herriot has communicated to M.M. Theunis and Hymans the details of bis conversations with Mr. Ramsay MacDonald, which, according to a subsequent statement by M. Theunis. pern£ts the hope of close co-operation between Britain, France. Italy, and Belgium, Avith a vieiv to carrying out the experts’ plan.
BERLIN, June 24. It is understood that - a personal message from Mr. MacDonald to M. Herriot has been communicated to the Chancellor (Dr. Wilhelm Marx). The message points out that disquieting reports have reached the British and French Governments of the increasing activities of the Nationalist and Militarist Associations, and urges the German Government in its own interest to facilitate such an examination as will dispel suspicion.
