Bayley and Willard, the Australian Olympic tennis players, provided a sensation at Wimbledon in the matches against'the two leading British players. Bayley defeated Lvcett 7-5, 6-4,' 3-6 6- ' YY illard had had luck in his match against Wheatley (a member of the Davis Cup team). Willard appeared to have the game well in hand when he developed a severe cramp, and in the deciding set he was compelled to retire, the match thus going to' Wheatley, 4dh 7- 5-7, 7-5, 2-1, The second round was full of thrills and surprises. Wimbledon has not seen finer tennis than that by Lacoste in defeating Manuel Alonso, 2-6, 6-2, 13-15, 6-3, 6-1. Lacoste was versatile and tireless, and made brilliant passing shots. Alonso showed a magnificent forehand drive, and his net-work and volleying were splendid, hut he tired after the third set.
. The three Americans (Hunter, Richards, and Washburn) entered the third round together with the British players (Gilbert, Kingscote Greig, Heighton, Crawford, and Wheatley. The Frenchman. Jean Borotra, heat Woosnam. 6-3, 7-5, 2-6, 6-4. Jn the ladies’ first round Mile. Lenglen heat Miss Lumhevellis, 6-0 6-0-Mi ss Wills heat Miss Scharman, 6-1, 6-0; and Aliss Rvnn heat Mrs. Bouverie, 6-0, 6-0.
