"With a record entry of 277, the qualifying rounds of the British open championship have opened on two courses, half playing at Hoylake and half at Forinhy, with a change over for the second round to-morrow. _ There is a formidable American contingent, including ex-champion Hagen. Sarazen, MacDonald. Smith, and Jim Barnes. Two Spaniards and half a dozen Frenchmen are also competing. Both course records were broken. George Oadd (RoehSmpton) headed the list at Form by with 70. Other scores were: McDonrdd_nnd Smith 72, Saracen 75, Rav 76', C. Whitcomb? 77, and Abe Mitchell 78. At Hoylake the veteran J. H. Taylor made a course record of 70. Other scores were: Havers (the holder) ,2. Tolley 77, Wethered and Duncan aB, Nicholls (America') 79. Barnes 81, and Hagen 8?>.
