Hawley had lived for fifteen years in China, representing a British firm, and was engaged in. the river transport of wood and oil by steamers. The junkermen, however, resented rim intrusion of machinery into the leisurely life of the river and beat Hawley ‘to death on the beach. The commander of the warship Cockshafer trained the guns on the city and compelled tlie military authorities to walk humbly in Hawley’s funeral cortege, after which the populace witnessed the shooting of junkermen.
