CARILLON.
TUNING OF BELLS. The fact that the war memorial at the University of Sydney is to take the form of a carillon invests with special interest the statement that in the last 26 years or so there has been rediscovered in England the special process_ known only to 'a comparatively tew persons, for the proper tuning of belts The process, it is said, is a very closely guarded trade secret among beli founders. The Building and Eurnishiim Trade Supplement to the Overseas Daily Mail published recently an interesting interview with Mr. C. J. Johnston, a director of the well-known firm ’of bellfounders Messrs Gillett and Johnston, who declared that, with the exception of the peal at the Royal Exchange', the harmonics of all the well-known peals of bells in London were “sadlv at fault.” He added: “An accomplished carillon. neur is now enabled to produce the most beautiful effects from a perfectly harmonised set of bells, equipped with the latesjb carillon machines, and there is practically no limitation to the music that can be successfully placed, it being also possible, by reason of the bells being tuned to equal temperament, to use them in any kev exactly in the same way a.s a -piano.”
