During the dinner (at the Victoria Hotel) an unknown Chinese bombed the oarty. A!. .Merlin was uninjured. M. De Maretz, manager of a silk importing company, in New York, and his wife were killed, as was M. E. Routeau, of the IndoChina Bank. M. Gerin, silk merchant, and M. Pelletier were mortally wounded. I ive were seriously injured and M. Merlin’s aide-de-camp was slightly wounded. The .assailants escaped. PEKIN, June 19. The death is recorded of Sir Dighton Probyn. He was a retired general and had filled many high offices, including Comptroller and Treasurer of the Household of King Edward when Prince of Wales. He served in the Transvaal, India, and China.
