FARMERS’ FN lON SOCIAL. There was an attendance of over two hundred quests at the complimentary social tendered in Otakeho Hall Friday evening to ladies and friends of the district by the Otakeho branch of the Farmers’ Onion on the occasion of the annual presentation of prizes gained in the branch competitions. Under the direction of the committee, headed by the president (Mr. E. T. Burke) and the hoii. secretary (Mr. H. R. Woods), a highly appreciated evening’s entertainment'. consisting of dances and musical items, was arranged, the programme extending far into the early hours of the morning. The proceedings were opened by the president, who, on behalf of the branch, extended a welcome to the large' gathering of guests and expressed the hope that the entertainment would prove an enjoyable one for all, after which, he called upon the M.C.’s to announce' the first dance. During the intervals between the dances and concert items the numerous prizes won a,t the annual cattle show and in the root crops competitions were presented, the various recipients in each case being called upon for responses, during the course of which much serious comment, interspersed with sallies in humorous vein, was delivered. The presentations were made by Mr. Burke and Mr. J. W. Deem (Department of Agriculture), the trophies being handed to . the recipients by Airs. Burke. in presenting the prizes gained at the branch cattle show, Mr. Burke referred briefly to the excellent work of the show in the direction of istimulating competition -amongst breeders, and the consequent beneficial results in the herds of the district. He congratulated those who had been successful, and urged those whose exhibits had not secured places to re-enter the competitions with renewed determination. The cattle prizes presented were as follow : —' S. J. Bennett.—lst 18-months bull, Ist grade heifer. Ist pair heifers, 2nd pedigree cow, 2nd, 3rd and 4th pedigree heifer calf, 2nd 24-year bul), 3rd pedigree 18-months heifer. i J. E. Young.—Champion dairy cow (cup presented by Mr. J. Nicolson, this being the second occasion on which it has been won by Mr. Young). J. D. Bashford.—lst 24-year hull. H. J. Berry.—lst- pedigree heifer calf, Ist pedigree 18-months heifer, Ist heifer in milk, 2nd aged bull, 2nd and 3rd bull calf, 2nd 18-months grade heifer, 2nd and 3rd pair heifers, 4th grade heifer calf (also awarded gold medal points prize donated by Mr. Mud ford). J. Nicolson.—lst and 3rd pedigree Jersey cow, 2nd and 3rd heifer in milk, 2nd 18-months pedigree- heifer, 3m 13moiiths bull, 3rd dairy cow. R. Holland. —Ist hull calf. J. Landers.—2nd 18-months bull. Herbert Bros.—2nd dairy cow. L. Bigliam.—2nd E. T. Burkes special. _ E. R. Putt. —2nd grade heifer calf. J. Daley.—3rd aged bull. R. J. Byrne.—3rd grade heifer calf. C. A. Burke.—lst aged bull and Ist E. T. Burke’s special. E. T. Burke.—lst grade heifer c-alf, 3rd and 4th 18-months grade heifer. The presentation of prizes for the latter .two was made- by the vicepresident, Mr. E. ]?.. Putt. Children’s prizes.—Heifer calf: Walter Todd 1, Maureen Burke 2, Eileen Burke 3, Nancy Burke 4. Led calf: Nancy Burke 1, Betty McCulluni 2, Bruce Christie 3, J. Walker 4. Fifteen consolation prizes were also given. Air. J. AY. Deem, who presented the root crops prizes complimented the .successful exhibitors on the excellent results obtained, and stressed the necessity tor the cultivation of the best of foodstuffs if they desired to. get the best results from their cattle. He also congratulated _ the branch on its excellent organisation, and made eulogistic reference to the work of the secretary (Mr. H. R.
