ENTERTAINMENTS

GRAND THEATRE—TO-NIGHT. “PURE GRIT.” A picture that ends with such a dash of speed that it almost leaves one breathless opens to-night at the Grand Theatre. Roy Stewart, who is well known as an outdoor character of the screen, is featured in the production as a Texas ranger who is in love with the district school teacher. Esther‘Ralston, a pretty blonde, is well cast in the role of the school teacher. The story is a screen version of “The Texas Ranger,” a popular novel of the southwest by William MacLeod Raine. The supporting programme includes “Baby Peggy” in “Hansel and Gretel,” and the opening episode of the great new serial “Phantom Fortune.”

OPERA HOUSE—TO-NIGHT. “TRILBY.” A highly delighted audience saw the initial screening of “Trilby” last night at the Opera House. Trilby is a First National super attraction, starring the famous French beautv Audree Lafayette, and the cast also includes such well-known stars as Creighton Hale, Arthur Edmond, Carewe and Francis MacDonald. Du Maurier’s immortal romance has been read and re-read by millions since it was first published over a score of years ago. Trilby, played by Audree Lafayette, is brought to life, adorable in the odd contradictions of her nature. Svengali, that fiend incarnate, is played by Arthur Carewe; he takes the part of that sinister vagabond musician-mesmerist, weaving his spell over poor Trilby, in a most convincing manner, his make-up and characterisation being nothing short of marvellous. The story is faithfully adapted, leaving nothing to he desired from an entertainment point of view. “Trilhy” will be shown again this evening.
