Mr Bruce, in the House of Representatives, said that Chinese labourers at Nauru were paid 22s monthly, but in addition there was a bonus of four shillings monthly, free board, housing, and clothes. The coolies and kanakas worked 54 hours a week, the Chinese mechanics 491, and the Europeans 41. The total population consisted of 603 Chinese, 1179 Nauruans, 110 whites, and one Chinese woman.
