- PAY AND HOURS OF WORK. BY CABLE—PRESS ASSOCIATION—COPYRIGHT Received June 20, 9.35 a.m. MELBOURNE, June 20. Mr Bruce, in the House of Representatives, said that Chinese labourers at Nauru were paid 22s monthly, but in addition there was a bonus of four shillings monthly, free board, housing, and clothes. The coolies and kanakas worked 54 hours a week, the Chinese mechanics 491, and the Europeans 41. The total population consisted of 603 Chinese, 1179 Nauruans, 110 whites, and one Chinese woman.
