A CLERK’S DISMISSAL.

ACTION OF COMMITTEE. Considerable discussion took place at the meeting of the Wanganui Hospital Board on Wednesday concerning the dismissal of a member of the clerical •staff. It was stated in the course of the discussion that the clerk in question at the last meeting applied for an increase in salary, and this matter was referred to the executive committee, which at W ednesday’s meeting reported that it had engaged another clerk at a salary of £350. The employee appealed to be heard on the matter. After hearing an explanation by the secretary, which was taken in committee, Mr Pilkington moved that the executive had exceeded its duties in dismissing the clerk and the appointment of his successor. He said the board had relegated to the committee the question of salary and nothing else. He contended that the committee should have reported back to the board before making an appointment. The chairman said that reference to the matter was made at last board meeting. Mr Battle:-It is not on the minutes. Mr Pilkington disclaimed any intention of being discourteous, but said he was arguing on broad principles. Mr Halligan seconded the motion. The chairman: It is a vote of censure on the committee. Members: No! No! The voting was equally divided, and it was lost on the casting vote of the chairman. Dr. Skerman suggested that the matter should now be dropped.. Mr Ritchie contended that the chairman and secretary should have some control over the staff, and should have power to dismiss an employee if thev considered they were right in doing so. Mr Pilkington: There was no need for haste. They could have reported to the board. On the motion of Mr Halligan it was decided to hear the case of the exemployee.—Herald.
