LOCAL AND GENERAL.
At about 3 o’clock yesterday morning a car while turning from Wilson street into High street collided with a telephone post. It appears that skidding was the cause of the mishap.
Shortly after 11 o’clock this morning an accident occurred at the junction of South road and Collins street between a trap driven by Mr Mills, of \Vhakamara, and a car driven by Dr. Burst. The trap was very badly smashed, while the car only had minor damage done, such as mudguard and lamps benf. Fortunately no one was injured.
Those who have had training in first aid find that interest in the work grows rapidly and invaluable knowledge is gained x which may be required at any time. The St. John Ambulance Society has a branch at Hawera, and -are making arrangements fo, r first aid classes to be held during thp winter months. 1 Cople who intend joining the classes for first aid and home nursing are asked to attend a meeting on Tuesday night- at the Borough Council Chambers at S o’clock. A well-known furniture establishment (Messrs G. Syme and Co.) had an unusual visitor yesterday morning. A cow passing along the street with a man and a couple of dogs at her heels entered tile double front doors, which were open at the time, and immediately proceeded to a large wardrobe, where she studied her reflection in the mirror for some moments. She then walked between the furniture to a counter on the left of the entrance and, as one of the staff put it, presented her card. Having done this, she walked round to the back of the counter, and was soon in such a position that she was neither able to go forward or turn back. She remained as though in a bail, perfectly quiet and unconcerned, while the counter and some furniture was removed fo that she could make her exit, which she did without the slightest damage to the flirniture or fittings.
