PARK BOWLING CLUB.
ANNUAL MEETING. The annual meeting of the Park Bowling Club was held at the Borough Chambers last night, there being over thirty members present. Mr. F. A. Quin (president) occupied the chair. The third annual report was read, of which the following is a summary: Your committee desire to congratulate members on the beautiful weather experienced during the 1923-24 season; also on the excellent manner in which the green played, although towards the end it showed signs of wear. The membership is still good, but there is room for more, and it is to be hoped an endeavour will be made to secure as many new members as possible. During the year the usual Banner matches were played, Manlaia winning in the southern division, but was defeated in the play-off. Four rinks contested the Syme Shield on January 2, Manaia Club annexing the trophy for the year. We congratulate, our Plains neighbours for achieving this success, as it adds more interest to the competitions when the trophy goes round. It is to be hoped next year Patea and Park Clubs will make a big effort to score a win. A touring team from Palmerston North visited Taranaki in February, and played morning and afternoon games on the two local greens on the 20th. The visitors expressed themselves ias being highly delighted with the hospitality extended to them, and spoke in eulogistic terms of the greens. On New Year’s Day
a progressive pairs tournament was held, and the opinion was freely expressed that it was one of the most enjoyable days spent on the green. There were twenty entries, and these would have been increased had members realised that it would be absolutely necessary to be on the green a short time before the starting of play. After the draw a number put in an appearance, and could not understand why they -could not be included. *lt was hard to convince them that their inclusion meant a fresh draw, whichwould have taken up far too muchtime. A feature of the year was the first South Taranaki Easter tournament, at which twenty-eight rinks (or 112 players) were-engaged. . Pai’k en-
tered five rinks, one of which (Chadwick, Thurston jun., Villars and McGregor) did lemarkably well, getting into the finals. They are to be congrtatulated on the excellent fight they put up, more especially as three of them were second year players. There t is no doubt the tournament lasted too i long, getting into the fifth day, and 1 this was most inconvenient for some 1 players. Your club was not repre- * Rented at the Centi'e’s tournament in ( January. The financial position of f the club is fully disclosed in the { balance-sheet. \Y. McLlaren won the * champion singles; lie and E. McPhil- 1 lips tied with eleven games each, the former winning in the play-off. ’ H. 1 Edwards was successful in the handi- ' cap singles with seven wins to his credit. Afternoon have again been self-supporting, there being a credit balance of £1 11s 3d. The thanks of the club lare due to the Bor- 1 ough Council for keeping the surroundings of the green in order. It must 1 he admitted that the show of asters and other flowers during the summer 1 was very fine. At the last annual meeting a resolution was carried, as a 1 recommendation to the committee, that a smoke concert be held on the even- - ing of the official closing of the green. There was no official closing, all play ceasing immediately after the com- i pletion of tournament. In any case, a majority of the committee was ' against the proposal. In conclusion, , the hope was expressed that the com- • ing season would see a substantial addition to the membership, and that the weather conditions would be as ' favourable in 1924-25 as in 1923-24. ( The report and balance-sheet were ' adopted. The election of officers resulted: Patron, Mr. L. A. Bone (Mayor); president. Mr. C. Stannatrd; vicepresidents, Messrs. W. Grant and H. f L. Edwards, ] winner of handicap singles, fountain J pen. j Mr. McGregor presented an enlarged , framed photograph of the runners-up , at the Easter tournament, which the president received with thanks, congratulating Mr. McGregor and his rink on their success.
