U.S. POLITICS

THE DEMOCRATS’ CANDIDATE. A BIG FIGHT EXPECTED. «Y CABIiI—PRESS ASSOCIATION —COPYRIGHT NEW YORK, June 17. The Democratic convention, which, is a week away, promises to offer a veritable battle between the political giants of the party, a state of affairs obviously lacking at the Republican convention at Cleveland, where President Coolidge’s influence was omnipotent. The aspirants for the Democratic presidential honour are in the following order of importance : Mr W. A. McAdoo, Mr Smith, Senator Ralston, Senator Underwood, Mr Davis (ex-ambas-sador to Britain), Senator Glass, Governor Silzer (New Jersey), ex-Governor Cox (Ohio), ex-vice-president Marshall, Mr Homer Cummings (temporary chairman of the Democratic convention of 1920), and Mr A’ance McCormick (manager of the late Dr. Wilson’s 1916 campaign). It would not be surprising, however, if a practically unknown figure rose triumphant as a compromise candidate following a prolonged conflict among the major aspirants. This is especially likely since a twothirds majority of delegates is required for the choice. The McAdoo forces are determined to intsitute the simple majority practice, but they are unlikely •to succeed. The party leaders are making strenuous efforts to avoid a. schism at the convention leading to a lasting breach between the factions. Enthusiasm is expected to reign and deep differences of opinion are already in evidence.
