CYCLE ROAD RACE.
HAWERA ATHLETIC CLUB’S SUCCESSFUL EVENT. Ideal Aveather was experienced yesterday afternoon for the first amateur cycle road race run in Taranaki* promoted by the Haivera Amateur Athletic Club. The trophies, the gifts of various business firms, iiere the most A’aluable yet offered for amateur cycle races run in New Zealand, and these drew a large number of entries, combeing present from Wanganui and Palmerston North as well as local inters.. Twenty-four cyclists faced the starter (Mr L. Marter), Avho dispatchecl the first of the competitors at three o clock in the presence of a gathering of spectators at the White Hart corner. The last man to leave the mark Avas I. Dai'ey. The progress of the competitors oA'er their long journey ot about 17£ miles was watched with great interest, and there Avere numerous gatherings of spectators along the route, AV’hich was as follows: HaAvera, Normanby, Okaiawa, Scott road, Main, feouth road, and finishing at Arthur’s lAUnl"uUre I A U n l "u Ure war ehouse in Princes street. AL the competitors except one finished the course, the first man to arrive being Tipnett (7-lmin handicap), who reached the finishing line in 52min lsec after starring. The large croAvd at the finishing post gave Tippett a warm reception, his effort being a particularly good one, seeing that he has only been a cycle rider for three weeks, and he succeeded in putting up second best time.
