SCIENTIFIC DAIRY WORK.
AT TECHNICAL HIGH SCHOOL. MR GRAY’S SUGGESTIONS. A suggestion was made by Mr Gray at last night’s meeting of the Technical High School Board that the land round the hostel should he run as a one-man farm, there being three subdivided paddocks, from which the proceeds could cover the labour expenses and a little more. He remarked on the call for intensive cultivation, and therefore the .scheme would give an opportunity of boys getting practical instruction. He believed five or six fanners' could be got to let students go to their farms, see practical work done, and learn what to do at different, seasons of the year ahd“the best methods. Continuing, Mr Gray said that dairy science would be a special feature of the school, for it was ’a field of work that needed watching, carefully. He also urged that dairy factory assistants should be encouraged^to 'attend continuation classes. He could make ' a compact syllabus which could he covered in a short time, and he had been assured of liberal help from the Dairy Division. He was out to do the work thoroughly, and would rather leave it alone than not do it well. He considered that these suggested arrangements would meet the demand for practical agriculture, and incidentally would -help the school by putting and keeping the land in order round the hostel, besides being made to nay its own way. - Members of tne board were all keenly in accord with the suggestions, looking on them as a means of widening the scope and influence of the school and of encouraging scientific work as applied to farming.
