The pearls were presented •to the Louvre bv M. liners’ sister in 1881,. but as ‘their artistic value as an exhibit was considered to have expired, Parliament agreed to the sale. The proceeds will be applied to the aid of charities. IT.S. MERCHANT MARINE. „ WASHINGTON, June 16. The united States is prepared to electrify the entire merchant marine, converting hundreds of Governmentowned trading .vessels into motor ships. The campaign to rejuvenate the service and make it a, strong factor in the world’s commerce may be accomplished in two ways—firstly, the Government converting its own vessels; secondly, lending money to private owners on a 50-50 basis for conversion purposes, or to purchase converted vessels from the Government.
DRUG SMUGGLING. NEW . YORK, June 16. Drugs valued at more than two million dollars were seized on a. truck coming from the pier at Hoboken, New Jersey. The seizure is said by agents of the Treasury Department to have uncovered one of the most elaborate and effective schemes ever divulged in connection with smuggling narcotics into the States. LONDON, June 16. Sir Eric Geddes, referring to the fact that the parent tyre company was opposing the scheme to reduce capital, said this was sufficient to block the scheme. Negotiations with a view to a settlement 1 had so far proved unsuccessful.
Sir Arthur Dueros declared that under the reduction scheme the parent tyre company holders' of C preference shares were asked to sacrifice £630.000. which would be a gift to ordinary shareholders, but they would co-operate in most friendly discussion of the alternative scheme.
