TRADE DULL.

POSITION IN WELLINGTON. Trade in Wellington is unquestionably dull, but that does not mean that there is a depression; it simply means dullness as compared with the early months of the year, or even when compared with t-lie coi-respondinir period of last year (reports an exchange). The retailers of soft goods are feeling the pinch, and this is evident from the continuance bargain sales and the daily out in prices. Genera! trade is slow, and even on the stock exchange there is a quiet tone. On the Y\ ellington exchange on Alonday, not a single sale was recorded, and business lias been very slack for some time. There is. however, some explanation for the stock exchange dullness. Jt is time prices of all stocks and shares that are favoured by investors are at peak prices, and holders me unwilling to accept the current prices because of the difficulty of re-investing. There appears to be a, strong tendency at present to buy Government stocks and bonds, which is not a pleasing feature. The money that is going into these securities ought rightly to he used for developing the resources of the country, hut unfortunately there is an aversion to lending on mortgage, which is somewhat of a pity. Apart from stock exchange securities, investors have the choice of debentures that are now on issue by several local bodies. The present dullness may be n temporary affair! for. after all. this is the naturally dull period of the year when production on the farms ' has ceased.
