THE VICE-PRESIDFNCf. REPUBLICAN NOMINEE. LABOUR OPPOSED TO DAWES. 3T CABLE —PRESS ASSOCIATION—COPY BIGHT NEW YORK, June 14. For the first time in the history oi the Republican Party women sat on an equality with men on the new national convention, which met at Cleveland and inaugurated a programme lor electing •the. ticket nominated by the convention, which closed yesterday. The assistant sec-retaiy will be a. woman. The Republican ticket is commented on favourably by the Conservative Eastern Republicans, says a Washington message, but has not aroused much enthusiasm in the section of the parly dominated by tin? progressives and Western agriculturists. Disappointment is expressed by members of Congress that the middle west and agricultural west are not represented. Brigadier-General O. G. Dawes, tliei nominee for the Vice-Prsidency, who is one of Chicago’s leading financiers, is an open and bitter foe of organised Labour. He was the leader of the open shop movement in Chicago. It- is claimed by many that his election as Vice-President will serve to alienate the Labour vote in many districts. As the chief of a big financial corporation he is unlikely to attract the farmer v'ote, since many Western agriculturists blame the financiers in the big cities fo,r their troubles. Impartial observers declare’ that if tlie Democrats name a strong ticket and Senator La Follette runs as an independent candidate, the outeojhe of the campaign will be highly uncertain. This feeling is. not shared by President Coolidge, who, in a message of congratulation to General Dawes, said: “It will he a pleasure to he associated with you in public service,” thereby assuming the certainey of a Republican victory.
