A London cable states that Lieut.Colonel AVni. Robert Campion, a men> ber of the House of Commons, has been appointed Governor of West Australia.

At a special meeting of the Eltham Chamber of Commerce held last night Mr A. E. Lethbridge was appointed night watchman for the Eltham business area.

Mr W. D. Ross, manager of the Eltham branch of the Bank of New South Wales for the past 12 years, has been appointed to open a new branch of the bank at Plankton Junction. Mr Glover, of Dannevirke, has been appointed to Eltham in Mr Ross’ place. Our Eltham correspondent states that last night was the coldest experienced in Eltham for some considerable time. A very severe frost was experienced until early morning, and then an extremely cold southerly wind sprang up with rain.

Another old colonist, Mr. Thomas Broderick, died on June 4 at the age of 89 years. The deceased arrived in the colony in 1843 in the barque Mary, crossing the Line on his eighth birthday. The father of deceased purchased land on the Porirua Road, but, finding his holding too small, acquired a larger block in the Ohariu Talley, wfiere he lived until his death. His sons, Thomas and William, acquired adjoining property on the Porirua Road over sixty years ago, and it was there that Thomas Broderick spent his last days. At a meeting of the directors of the Wanganui Chronicle Co. Ltd. held yesterday, Air. T. Currie presented Air. W. G. Rees-Jones, managing directod, who is leaving for England and the TJ.S.A., with a token of their esteem. They also expressed the wish that he would have a pleasant voyage and return fully restored to health, Mr. Rees-Jones leaves for England by the Rotorua.

Air C. A. Strack, late headmaster of the Hawera school, has just completed three weeks’ holiday in Southland in glorious weather. He visited Orepuki, Nokomai, Tuatapere, and Waiau. The grass country is equal to Taranaki, and dairying is making rapid progress. Air Strack was successful in a prospecting mining tour at Aroha and Kia Ivotau. The late Air Percy Coffey was well known in Hawera, where years ago the family lived for a considerable time. He was prominent as a footballer, and was one of the mainstays of the old Rival Club.

News has 'been received by cablegram that Dr. P. J. Jorv has obtained the degree of F.C.R.S., London. Dr. Jory, who qualified at the Otago Medical School, left for the war with the Main Body of the Expeditionary Force, and eventually gained the rank of lieuten-ant-colonel.
