LOCAL AND GENERAL.
At the annual conference of North Taranaki school committees, held at New Plymouth yesterday, a resolution was passed supporting Mr Isit-t’s. Bill for provision of Bible reading in schools, 11 delegates voting for the motion and five against.
A reminder is given of the reception to Miss Maida Hooker, which will be held at the Ravoy Rooms this evening. A very interesting programme has been arranged and a large attendance is expected.
The usual monthly meeting of the Executive Committee of the Hawera Retailers’ Association was held last evening. A letter from the Winter tohow -Company with reference to the matter of window displays during Show neefc was considered, it was finally moved: That the company lie advised chat the executive, while in sympathy with the proposal, ts or opinion that the competitions should he Conducted by the company as an adjunct to the snow. It was resolved that the Hawera County Council be written to with regard to the condition of part of Fraser itoad with a view to some immediate improvement being effected. The date of the annual meeting of the association was fixed for duiv 17th.
It was only on Wednesday evening that the concluding trials were made of the new printing machine on which yesterday’s issue was printed, so that it was not till yesterday morning that we were certain of putting the machine into commission. In the short time at disposal that the morning afforded we informally invited as many friends as vve could get into touch with, and were \ery gratified indeed to see so many present at the first printing, our gratification being greatly added to by the interest displayed by our guests in the working of the machine. The Mayor (Mr L. A. Bone) very kindly congratulated the proprietary on. the enterprise displayed by the installation of such a fine modern machine, and the formal starting of the press was performed by Mrs R F Page, only daughter of the late Mr JV. A. Parkinson and a director of this company. We repeat our invitation of yesterday that we will be pleased to have any friends who may wish, to do so see the press running, and to do so it will be necessary to he present at 12.30 or 3.45 p.m. of anv Ut l y °L u week excepting Saturday, when the hours would be 12.30 and 2 is P.m. This invitation, we hope it will fie understood, includes ladies and children.
