Mr F. Hartshorn, secretary of the Heretaunga Co-op Dairy Co., has received a communication from Hon. Thos. Mackenzie, Minister of Agriculture, stating that at present the Department cannot appoint a butter grader for Hawke's Bay and Gisborne as requested by a deputation which waited upon him. The Minister states that the Department is curtailing rather than increasing its staff. Correspondence from " Reform " is necessarily withheld from publication for two reasons, viz., (I) The letter referred to by " Reform " has already appeared in our columns, and (2) It would be a serious breach of etiquette on our part were we to oublish " Reform's " letter before the newspaper referred to in it had been afforded the opportunity of doing so. We tnink " Reform " will recognise that we are right in withholding his letter on this point alone. A meeting of the Heretaunga Anglers Club was held in the Pacific Hotel last night. Mr J. J. Faulkner presided. It was decided to change the name of the club from " H awke's Bay" to " Heretaunga." Mr T. Pickett was elected treasurer, a o d Mr Fred Culien was appointed to take Mr Pickett's place: on the committee. The rules were submitted, and after being discussed were adopted. This club is to be congratulated upon its success. It has now over sixty members. The town was thrown into a mild sensation this afternoon by a horse, attached to a four wheeled vehicle, bolting. The owner of the conveyance evidently had some business to transact in Market Street and left his horse unattended. The animal took fright and started off from a point near Messrs Stubbs and Beck's. In turning into Here'aunga Street the tr;ip narrowly missed colliding with M-ssrs Land and Heighway'.s verand ih p >s' . fhenceafter the horse luckily kept i - the middle of the street aiong which it raced at a g >od sprt d right through the town. Finally it was stopped in front of the Wesleyan Church and neither horse nor trap wtre any the worse for the adventure.
