Valedictory.

(Per Press Association). Woodville, March 17 Mr R. B. Ross, M.H.R., was presented with a purse of sovereigns by his Woodville supporters and residents in the back country last night. Eulogistic speeches were made and the electorate congratulated on having such a capable member, Timaru, March 17 At a largely attended public meeting at Geraldine last night Mr F. R. Flatmaivs constituents presented him with an illuminated address. The Premier and the Minister of Lands, and Sir J. Steward were among those present. The address congratulated Mr Flatman on his fifth consecutive election and praised his conduct as a candidate, and as representative, which had amply justified his election. Mr Flatman thanked his constituents and accepted the testimonial as proof of the good will of both his supporters arid opponents. The Premier began a speech of an hour and three'juarters by endorsing the sentiment ot the address, and congratulating Geraldine on their representative, than whom no man was more highly respected in the House. He referred to the result of the late election as an endorsement of the policy of administration and the legislation of the Seddon Government, and enlarged on these by varied illustrations. He touched briefly on several questions and spoke emphatically of his determination to overcome monopolies, especially mentioning the shipping combine against (lie west of England contract. He gave some information re the progress of laud for settlement and the Midland railway, and the allocation of education and charitable aid endowments. He indicated the necessity * for reducing the. customs on necessaries and invited the Chambers of Commerce and industrial associations to advise the Government on the subject. The speech was well received, and he was warmly applauded. Messrs Duncan ami Steward also spoke briefly.
