THURSDAY, MARCH 9, 1899. THE HORTICULTURAL AND INDUSTRIAL SHOW.
For the cause that lacks assistance, For the wrongs that need resistance, For the future in the distance, And the good that we can do.
All doubf must now be dispelled as to the ability of Hastings "to make a horticultural and industrial exhibition. The show generally compares favorably with those held in any part of the Colony. The cut flowers and fruits could not be surpassed. In bottled fruits, jams, and jellies, the exhibition is excellent. Vegetables are only moderately represented, and in this connection we think that more of the small farmers should compete. It is true the season is somewhat late. The vegetables on exhibition, however, shows what can be produced, particularly in onions and potatoes. These were simply excellent. In pot plants the show is not all that could be desired. Still, the exhibit', though few, are, with few exceptions, good. At the next show we hope to see more exhibits in this class. In the industrial classes, excepting bottled fpuifc and jams, a great improvement could be made. We hope to see a much larger competition at future shows in all the industrial classes. We think that industries of every description should be encouraged—in the orchard, the vegetable garden, the flower girden. the conservatory, the workshop, the home, the field, the dairy. They should all be brought into the net of a Horticultural and Industrial Society. However, the start made is, taken alround, a good one, and we congratulate the Society upon its excellent inaugural show.
