OLE DEFENCES.

A return just published shows that the amount voted for defence purposes in New Zealand during the twenty years ending 1897 was over £3,000,000. What haye we to show for this huge expenditure ? Is there any one of onr large cities protected ? How long is the frittering away of revenue to continue? Three millions of money would provide the colony with a squadron capable of defending us against any power, whilst the hundred thousand or more which throwing away every year on tin soldiers would maintain a navy.
