Pakis, March 6.
The Lagouban naval magazine, near Toulon, was blown up by an explosion at 2 o'clock on Sunday morning, killing 40 people and wounding at least 110 residents in the neighborhood. Many were thrown out of their beds by the force of the concussion, and rushed in their night attire into the streets in terrible panic, believing that an earthquake had occurred. Numbers of people were buried in the ruins. A vehicle was blown into the sea a hundred yards distant, and the occupants drowned. The explosion is attributed to the chemical decomposition of a box of smokeless powder igniting and exploding 200 tons of powder. Two other magazines, though close by, escaped. Houses for miles round had all the windows smashed, and chimneys were demolished. The injured were frightfully mutilated. The corporal in charge of the magazine was literally scalped. Huge . stones were hurled a great distance, v The explosion was feifc at Sice.
Rescue work is proceeding,
