The Railway Engines.
AND THEIR REMOVAL. BEFORE THE BOROUGH COUNCIL. At the meeting of the Hastings Borough Council on Wednesday evening, His Worship the Mayor remarked that under the new railway time-table the Hastings engines were to be removed to Napier. He had written the General Manager on the subject, but had not yet received a reply. It was a short-sighted policy on the part of the Department to remove the engines from Hastings. They had to run a train into Napier at eight o'clock every evening, which was very nearly empty, so that they could come out in the morning. Cr Crosse moved that the action of the Mayor be approved. It was a great hardship having no engine here. Apart from the floods, stock and pro-duce-shippers were made to suffer, The Mayor : It remains for the Council to take action* Cr Beilby: Sixty pounds a wesk, at least, are being thrown away through having no engine at Hastings. Cr Linney : A public petition might produce some good. It was eventually decided to await a repty to fee Mayors communication*
